Hugh's interests outside work include:

Reading - mainly crime fiction.

Genealogy - finding out about where he comes from in terms of people and places. This has included involvement in the publication of a book of poems and songs by my great-grandfather, Louis McLachlan, called Backwoodsman's Rangitikei. Find out more about it on backwoodsman.org.nz.

It has also included involvement in the organisation of events to mark the 175th anniversary of the voyage of the Blenheim and the development of a website at blenheim175.wordpress.com and related book "the Blenheim People" to provide background information on the passengers on that voyage.

Food - exploring different foods and flavours.

Travel - going to different parts of the world but also discovering New Zealand.

Rugby - watching anyway; living the highs and lows of supporting Wellington, the Hurricanes and the All Blacks!
